Venus and Serena Williams are continuing to capture the imaginations of tennis and sports lovers around the world. The sisters are both at the top of the game right now and they have each won their third round singles matches at the U.S. Open in Flushing, New York. One more win for each, and they will face each other in the quarter-finals. It will be a dramatic moment and match. Each sister has her own stellar career and many of their defining moments and indeed, great moments for the sport, have happened when the two have played together as a doubles team, or against each other.
The sisters were born in Michigan and raised in Compton, California. The girls were home schooled and participated in tennis at an early age. Their parents hoped that success in a sport would lead to great opportunities and a better life. The dream came true when both sisters exploded onto the tennis scene in the late 1990's.
Venus and Serena have both held the title of Number 1 player at different times in their careers. Serena is known for her smooth serve which has been clocked at over 120 m.p.h. and is considered the best serve on the WTA tour. She has won eight Grand Slam singles titles and two Olympic gold medals in women's doubles. Venus has a similar powerful serve, also clocked in the high 120's, and she is best known on the court for her forehand drive volley, a move that she has popularized on the tour. Venus has won sixteen Grand Slam Titles and is the current Wimbledon singles and doubles champion.
