Christine Marie Evert, known as Chris Evert in the tennis world, was born on December 21,1954 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Her father was a professional tennis coach and she began playing tennis at a very early age. Between the years of 1974 and 1986, Chris Evert was a women's tennis champion. At the age of 19, Chris won her first Wimbledon title in 1974. In single matches she has the best record of any professional tennis player in history.
Chris Evert was once engaged to Jimmy Connors, also a Wimbledon champion. She later married John Lloyd and played under the name of Chris Evert Lloyd until their divorce. She married Andy Mills in 1988 and they have together three sons. The couple divorced in 2006.
Upon her retirement in 1989, Chris Evert held her very first fund raiser. She hosted the Pro-Celebrity Tennis Classic in Boca Raton, Florida. This event was to raise money to benefit a campus of drug treatment facilities in one of the poorest South Florida neighborhoods.
Chris's excellent success in fund raising had her join forces with The Ounce of Prevention Fund of Florida. This organization was established in 1988 and is committed to help with the prevention of family and social problems. Governor Martinez of Florida pledged to match dollar for dollar all the funds Chris Evert raised.
Today, Chris Evert continues to raise money to fund programs to benefit at-risk children and their families. In 2007, the 18th Anniversary of the Chris Evert Pro-Celebrity Tennis Classic, she raised over 1.2 million dollars. These funds are distributed to programs over the state of Florida.
