Serena Jameka Williams was born on September 26, 1981 in Saginaw, Michigan. Serena has had a fantastic tennis career. In fact she is currently ranked number 1 in the world. Over the years, one of her sisters, Venus, has been giving her some competition as they constantly battle for the number 1 spot.
Serena Williams started playing at the age of 4 and ½ at the urging of her father. The Williams family moved to the suburbs of Compton, California where Serena’s tennis career started. She had won her first tournament at the age of 4 and by the age of 10, out of 49 tournaments, she had won 46 of them. In 1991, their father began to worry about racism hindering the girls’ chances of fair play so he moved the family to West Palm Beach, Florida where Serena and Venus began their tennis clinics. It was at the age of 14 that Serena played her first professional tournament. Due to her age, she was forced to play in non-WTA tournaments. Fortunately, it was an eye opener because she was defeated in less than an hour of play. Over the next several years, the sisters continued to score big in terms of prize money, record book appearances, and a series of significant court victories over the top seeded players.
Serena Williams started her fight in Compton and ended up being the world ranked number 1 player in tennis. Despite several colorful comments, colorful outfits, and her colorful personal life, she is still able to play a great tennis match.
