Chris Evert

Chris Evert is a women's professional tennis player in the United States. She was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in December of 1954. Her father was a professional men's tennis coach and was also her coach. At the age of 5 he started to teach Chris how to play and quickly realized that she had a gift for the game.

Chris realized herself that she was very good at the game of tennis, and she showed the state of Florida how good she was in 1969. At the age of 14 Chris was ranked number 1 in the 14 and under group. The next year she won the nationals for the 16 and under group. At the age of 16 she made her grand slam debut in 1971 at the U.S. Open, which is a great honor for any one of any age. While in her professional career she was number 1 for 5 years in a row, she won 157 single titles and 8 doubles titles throughout her whole career. Evert played her best games on the clay courts rather then on the artificial turf. Evert finally decided to retire from the professional tour in 1989.

Since she retired Evert coaches the tennis team at Saint Andrew's School in Boca Raton, Florida. She has also opened her own tennis academy that shares her name in the same area. Evert hopes that she can pass along her enthusiasm to the next generations of tennis players. Her academy is open to all ages and has an on campus dormitory for the full time attenders.
