Jimmy Connors

Connors began playing tennis at an early age and was coached by his mother Gloria. Gloria was a professional tennis coach and she continued to coach Jimmy over his entire career. Connors attended the University of California and later turned professional in 1972 at the age of 20. During the time that Connors played, tennis rackets were mostly made of wood and Connors became famous for being one of the first to try a steel racket. The steel racket caught on, and soon many professionals were using them as well. Most professional players enjoyed the benefits of a lighter weight racket.

Over his professional years, Connors has won 147 titles, beginning in 1974; he won the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. Connors has also brought home 15 titles in doubles matches when he played alongside Llie Nastase, the first in 1973. Connors also played mixed doubles with future girlfriend Chris Evert; they were runner-ups in the U.S. Open in 1974. Connors is known for his great playing style and his love of the crowd’s involvement. Connors continued to play on a professional level until he retired in 1996.

He dated fellow tennis star and former partner Chris Evert, but the couple broke off their engagement. Connors currently resides in Santa Barbara, California with his longtime wife Patti McGuire and there two children. Connors continues to coach and formally coached tennis great, Andy Roddick, from 2006 to 2008. Connors has also been commentating and working as an analyst for the Tennis Channel.
