John McEnroe

John McEnroe was born on a United States Military Base in Wiesbaden, West Germany on February 16, 1959. His father, John Sr. was serving in the Air Force and his mother, Kay, was a surgical nurse. McEnroe was rated number one in the world of tennis for four straight years. He played singles tennis and won 70 titles during his career.

McEnroe was raised in Douglaston, New York. He attended a high class preparatory school in Manhattan where he was looked upon as being funny and also rowdy.

McEnroe was also known for his sudden out bursts on the tennis courts, expressing his anger at judges and other players alike. He was suspended after an outburst at the U.S. Open and charged with misconduct and being verbally abusive.

His most successful year was in 1984 when he won thirteen tournaments including Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. He had a record of 82 wins and only 3 losses that year.

In 1986 giving way to the stresses of the game, McEnroe took six months off from playing tennis to pull himself together and regroup. However, when he returned to the tour later in 1986 his form was not what it should have been and he never seemed to gain back his edge.

Since he retired from professional tennis, McEnroe has become the voice of tennis as he broadcasts matches with his not unexpected canter and outbursts of disbelief. He was married to Tatum O’Neal for 8 years and fathered three children with her. They divorced in 1994.
