Serena Williams was born on September 26th, 1981, in Saginaw, Michigan. Serena was born and raised by her father, Richard Williams, and mother, Orance Price, along with her 5 older sisters, including fellow tennis star, Venus. Serena started playing competitive tennis at an early age and has been coached by her father since the beginning. Williams turned professional in 1995 and is currently ranked number one in the world. Williams is known for her power and her incredible baseline play. Over her career, Williams has won many titles in both singles tennis and doubles.
Serena Williams won her first Grand Slam singles championship in 1999 when she defeated Martina Hingis in the U.S. Open. In the same year, Williams teamed up with her sister Venus and won the doubles French Open and the U.S Open. In the 2000 season, the sisters won their first Wimbledon title in doubles by defeating Julie Halard-Decugis and Ai Sugiyama, and they won the Australian open the next year, this time defeating fellow Americans Lindsay Davenport and Corina Morariu. The sisters continued their doubles success in 2002 by winning Wimbledon again, in 2003 by winning the Australian Open again, winning Wimbledon once again in 2008 and the Australian Open in 2009.
Along with her doubles success, Serena has also had success in singles. After her first win in 1999, her next title was a victory at the French Open and Wimbledon in 2002. In 2003, Williams won the Australian Open and Wimbledon. Williams won the Australian Open again in 2005 and 2007 and won the U.S Open in 2008. The last title that Williams won was the Australian Open for a 4th time in 2009.
