Pete Sampras

Pete Sampras is known as one of the all-time great tennis players in history. He spent 286 consecutive weeks as the number 1 ranked player in the 1990's. He was nicknamed "Pistol Pete" because his serve was so fast. He started in professional tennis in 1988 at the age of 16 and by 1990 he beat Andre Agassi in the U.S. Open and became the youngest man ever to win. That was only the beginning of his legendary career.

During his 15 year career he won an astounding 14 Grand Slam Men's Single Titles. He had an amazing 203-38 win-loss record in 52 Grand Slam appearances. he has been named one of the top five men's tennis players of all time. He dominated the court throughout his career and by his unassuming manner brought back true sportsmanship and dignity to the game he loves.

Pete Sampras officially retired in August of 2003. Since his retirement, he has kept busy. In April 2006, he resurfaced on the court to play an exhibition match in River Oaks, Houston, Texas. He played 23 year old Robby Ginepri. Although Ginepri won, Pete later announced that he would be playing in World Team Tennis events. In 2007, Sampras played a few events in the Outback Champions Series as well as exhibition matches in Asia. Many observers note that even though he is older, he still has many of the skills he once had and tennis legend John McEnroe went so far as to say he would be worthy of a top five seed in Wimbledon if he chose to enter.
